EZKA COSMETICS

“Ezka is our baby” is how Erin Devlin and Katherine Coulston described what their new cosmetics brand means to them. The new Melbourne-based cosmetics brand, Ezka Cosmetics, has just released their first line of Australian-made, organic, sustainable skin-care products. “Cosmetics are for everybody” is how they lead on to admit that Devlin’s boyfriend now cannot say no to his daily routine with Ezka products. They even added a gender-neutral bodice as their logo to keep the brand accessible to anyone who cares about their skin and the environment. Both founders have commented on their own personal struggles to find skin-care products that are guilt free, all natural and effective, resulting in their new endeavour to make these hyper-conscious products readily available to the wider community.

Coulston and Devlin met at work where they felt an immediately connection and, with this, found common ground in their cosmetic struggles. Bonding quickly, ideas bounced between the pair as Ezka Cosmetics began to fall into place. They were irritated that finding affordable all-natural products that worked was so difficult, and that simple information on skin-care practices was never provided by bigger companies. So naturally, Devlin and Coulston worked to create a company that not only sells high quality products at affordable prices, but also create a platform to find information on skin-care and the best practices for an individual’s needs. They described their future Instagram page as a place of information and have transparent explanations of what natural ingredients are in each jar and why.

Having previously completed a Diploma of Beauty Therapy at The Gordon, Coulston has the knowledge required to assist with complex skin issues and prescribe the ingredients needed to rectify any damage done to the skin by unhealthy products. Furthermore, Ezka Cosmetics uses this knowledge to offer all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free products that are made in Australia with organic ingredients. Devlin described that years of swimming caused her skin to damage due to the chlorinated water. She, along with countless others, always assumed that she had “bad skin”, but was surprised when Coulston’s prognosis and tips produced positive results — results promised by products and brands that are internationally renowned. She explained that the biggest change came from the Ezka Vitamin-A Retinol, that Coulston states, assists with tissue regeneration and scar healing — which Devlin shared has begun to fade scars all over her body.

“The only direction to head in is a sustainable one,” said Devlin describing Ezka's green habits.

Coulston and Devlin were excited to share Ezka Cosmetics’ zero-waste initiative, a scheme they have worked hard to perfect. Personally, both founders aim to live a zero-waste life and feared, like many other business owners, how a business could impact this. Ezka Cosmetics provides its customers with recyclable and reusable glass jars and encourages customers to buy pump lids with their first purchase and then refills after that. They even provide 100% recyclable aluminium lids and packaging with every bottle to encourage a guilt-free purchase for every customer.

It seems common place that modern companies would aim for lowered emissions and cruelty-free products. However, scandal after scandal are making headlines as larger cosmetic corporations lead immoral practices, forcing ‘guilty shops’ on their beloved customers. So there’s a real sense of concern when a small start-up in the west of Melbourne achieves all the promises of larger international companies. It proves what everyone is thinking: “Why can’t they just do it?” To be cruelty-free, vegan, sustainable, organic, locally sourced and made and, in-turn, guilt-free, is in actuality not impossible. Large International cosmetics companies preach their good-will but actions speak louder than words. We at PIOUS say to them: it is THAT easy. Stop making excuses. A start-up company just beat you at your own game — be ashamed.
